Centrifugation is a common method to separate cells, but traditional cell culture devices like plates, dishes and flasks cannot be centrifuged, so centrifugation requires the transfer of cells from the primary culture device into conical tubes or bottles that are made for spinning. This process requires:
- Aspiration of samples from the original cell culture container
- Dispensing into the centrifuge tube, (followed by centrifugation)
- Decanting or aspiration of supernatant from centrifuge tube
- Addition of fresh suspension liquid volume (followed by agitation)
- Aspiration of the suspended cell concentrate
- Dispensing of the concentrate into a fresh cell culture device or final application
This common method requires a minimum of 6 sterile breaks, each of which risks contamination or accidental loss of sample. The Petaka G3™ was designed from the beginning to simplify this process and thus, reduce process risk substantially.
Unlike open dishes, plates, and flasks, the Petaka G3™ is designed to be centrifuged directly. The Petaka G3™ is manufactured to withstand up to 600g; plenty of force to quickly separate cells in-situ. Direct centrifugation results in a compact cell pellet in the bottom corner of the Petaka G3™ that may be securely washed and resuspended immediately for continued culture, or triturated and harvested in a concentrated volume.
This new, centrifuge-based cell separation method eliminates unnecessary sample transfers and reduces the associated contamination risk. This represents an improvement compared to traditional flask-based research and clinical cell culture. With the functional breakthrough the Petaka G3™ provides, many classic limitations and cell culture dogma no longer apply.
